3. The Co-education Chosen: Yes, shahada absolves past sins but not sins committed by not following the rules after becoming a Muslim. With one life determining the 'eternal' afterlife knowing the Islamic rules becomes paramount - even for Muslimas. No wonder the prophet emphasizes education to understand rules. Home education was the rule. Even if it was in schools, with the Islamic text remaining silent on coeducation rules, possibly separate education was the rule for sexes. This coeducation, therefore, may not quite be Islamic. .4 The Education Chosen: The Quran itself asserts the completeness of knowledge needed to be a good Muslim. Nevertheless, the book also orders people to follow the Prophet - which makes the Hadiths and the Sira almost equally important. In addition, things change, therefore, yes Izmz (consensus) and Iztehad (reasoning) are recognised by Islam in making practical decisions during this post ‘rightly guided caliph’ period. Also, the Islamic principle of knowledge/books/libraries has always been unique. Thus, the knowledge that is as mentioned in the Quran is already in the Quran. Anything that is against the Quran needs to be burnt. Yes, tracing that philosophy, Muslims did destroy libraries, especially in India. It is a different story that negating that it was the Arab Muslims themselves who translated the Indian texts to Arabic later on (as they did to the Greek works). And when those got translated into Latin in Spain, the zero and the array of mathematics and the structuralism of Sanskrit together helped in the formation of Modern Civilization so much! So the contribution of the Abbasid period in the formation of the Modern Civilization is very much acknowledged in the encyclopedia at womenspowerbook.org Thus, if the education type chosen by the Muslimas was the Islamic way as taught in the madrassas, a case for niqab could be made using piety, but the chosen education for studies is not pious at all. It is not only a product of the minds of the kufars however great, in some cases, it teaches stuff that goes against the knowledge offered by the Quran (e.g. oval earth, the earth revolves around the sun, mankind came from the monkeys etc.). Zakir Naik, the Islamic stalwart, made similar mistakes in showing respect to and reliance on them. Yes, despite the demand for piety in dress, the education they have chosen to study along with the kufars is secular. In fact, the originators of Hanbali, Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafei schools of thought would be appalled to find what these student Muslimas have opted to study. Yes, most Muslim leaders also mistakenly think that half the inheritance right prescribed for a woman is less. However, because it is pocket money without any responsibilities unlike the command for her husband, far from being less, it is actually in excess! In this context, this kufar education is designed to make women professional and independent. Thus, even if allowed, those Muslimas will have less time and intention to procreate more. That education, therefore, neither helps an Islamic family structure nor a global spread of Islam as emphasized by the prophet - at least through population growth. The ulema’s support for those girls itself, cannot be said to be ‘halal’ in Islam. 5. Does the dress become a threat? Unless used by nefarious elements, the niqab does not automatically become a threat to others. But carrying a knife/sword can be so. That is why despite being a part of the Sikh faith it is not allowed e.g. in the parliament or the aeroplane. 6. The Allowed Age: Also, even if the veil is allowed the next question that needs to be considered is, up to what age? Even if one disregards Khomeini's assertion, the prophetic ways answer it all. Although some Muslims deny, both the tradition of the prophet as narrated by his wife Ayesha and the Islamic tradition that traces his ways suggest that if not at 6 when the prophet did marry her, a girl’s lure starts at 9 when the prophet was tempted to consummate the marriage with her. In that case, a Modern Civilisation influenced government for health, security, ethical and moral reasons cannot allow veiling of girls from that age. 7. Enrolment in The Police And Army? The permit would not end there. Tracing the turban the argument could extend to the enrolment in the Police and the army wearing the niqab too. This has got its own drawbacks. Final words: Yes, the niqab has some good sides to it, but its negative side has more - especially when a secular and un-Islamic co- education is chosen for studies. In addition, the sudden appearance of this incident that too following a negotiation with the institute, and its spread to different parts of the country, India, seems to air a coordinated approach. The enlisting of global figures and institutes in denigrating the current regime when the issue is in the courts, seem to even air an interplay of money and #Hinduphobia. ------------------------------------------------------------ BACK
